Asbestos

As the campaign against the incurable diseases caused by asbestos continues, another university in Georgetown will undergo the process of renovation and main purpose behind this renovation is the abatement of asbestos.

This time, the process of renovation for the removal of asbestos is being carried out at Darnall Hall and all the floor tiles and other such material which may contain asbestos will be removed because there is a risk that if asbestos abatement is not carried out, the residents of dorm and the workers would become prone to the diseases like asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. According to some reports, nearly 2000 to 3000 Americans are affected by mesothelioma each year. The symptoms of this disease include chest pain and difficulty in breathing and unfortunately there is no cure yet for mesothelioma. Moreover, the disease does not show its symptoms for decades and it remains dormant for a long period until the condition of the patient becomes worse.

Building’s administration would follow the regulations of The District of Columbia, The Occupational, Safety and Health Administration and The Environmental Protection Agency regarding removal of asbestos. According to Georgetown Voice Blog, the abatement process is being carried out in the supervision of a professional contractor from The District of Columbia who has been hired especially for this purpose.

Moreover, the Georgetown University has also hired an industrial hygiene contractor who would monitor the process and would test the air samples from the location before and after the abatement process so that the success of process may be assured.

After the process has been completed, the building would be cleared using specific procedures.
